Mounjaro® (Tirzepatide)

Mounjaro® is one of the latest prescription treatments available to support weight loss. It contains tirzepatide, a medicine that works by mimicking two naturally occurring gut hormones—GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). These hormones help regulate appetite, increase feelings of fullness and slow the rate at which food leaves the stomach, making it easier to eat smaller portions and reduce calorie intake.

By targeting both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, Mounjaro offers a dual-action approach to weight management. Clinical studies have shown that, when combined with a healthy diet and increased physical activity, it can help eligible patients achieve significant and sustained weight loss.

How Does Mounjaro Work?

Mounjaro helps you lose weight by:

  • Reducing hunger and food cravings

  • Helping you feel fuller for longer after meals

  • Slowing stomach emptying, which prolongs feelings of satiety

  • Supporting better portion control

  • Helping reduce overall calorie intake

  • Improving blood sugar regulation, which may reduce fluctuations in hunger

Unlike appetite suppressants, Mounjaro works with your body's natural hormonal systems to support healthier eating habits and long-term weight management.

How is Mounjaro Taken?

Mounjaro is administered as a once-weekly injection using a simple pre-filled pen. Most patients find the device easy to use after receiving instruction from our pharmacist.

Treatment starts at a lower dose to help your body adjust before gradually increasing over several weeks, depending on your progress and tolerance. This gradual dose escalation helps minimise common side effects and improves long-term success.

Who May Be Suitable for Mounjaro?

Following a comprehensive consultation, Mounjaro may be suitable for adults who meet current prescribing criteria, such as those with:

  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) that meets eligibility requirements

  • Weight-related health conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or pre-diabetes

  • Previous unsuccessful attempts to lose weight through diet and exercise alone

Before prescribing, our pharmacist will review your medical history, current medications, lifestyle and weight loss goals to ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate for you.

What Results Can I Expect?

Individual results vary, but clinical trials have demonstrated that many patients achieve substantial weight loss when Mounjaro is combined with healthy lifestyle changes. Success depends on factors including adherence to treatment, dietary choices, physical activity and ongoing support.

Our aim is not simply to help you lose weight, but to help you maintain your results by developing healthier long-term habits.

Ongoing Monitoring and Support

At Tarbolton Pharmacy, you're supported throughout your treatment—not just at the point of prescribing.

Your follow-up appointments may include:

  • Weight and BMI monitoring

  • Progress reviews

  • Dose adjustments where appropriate

  • Advice on nutrition and exercise

  • Management of any side effects

  • Ongoing motivation and lifestyle coaching

Regular reviews allow us to monitor your progress, answer any questions and ensure you're achieving the best possible outcomes safely.

Possible Side Effects

Like all prescription medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. The most common are usually mild and temporary, particularly during the early stages of treatment or after increasing the dose.

These may include:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhoea

  • Constipation

  • Indigestion

  • Reduced appetite

Our pharmacist will explain how to minimise these effects and advise you on when to seek further medical advice if needed.

Wegovy®

Wegovy contains semaglutide, a once-weekly injection that helps reduce appetite and food cravings, making it easier to eat fewer calories while feeling fuller for longer.

It is prescribed alongside healthy eating and increased physical activity to support long-term weight loss.

Wegovy® Tablets (Oral Semaglutide)

For patients who prefer not to use injections, Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) may be available following a clinical assessment. Like the injectable version, oral semaglutide belongs to the GLP-1 receptor agonist family of medicines and works by helping to regulate appetite, slow stomach emptying and increase feelings of fullness, making it easier to reduce calorie intake.

Taken once daily, Wegovy tablets can provide an effective alternative for suitable patients who want the benefits of GLP-1 treatment without weekly injections. As with all prescription weight loss medicines, treatment should be combined with healthy eating, increased physical activity and long-term lifestyle changes to achieve the best results.

During your consultation, our pharmacist will discuss whether oral semaglutide is an appropriate option based on your medical history, current medications and weight loss goals. We'll explain how to take the tablets correctly, what results you can expect and provide ongoing support throughout your treatment.

Benefits of Wegovy Tablets

  • Once-daily oral treatment

  • No injections required

  • Helps reduce appetite and food cravings

  • Increases feelings of fullness after meals

  • Supports clinically significant weight loss when combined with lifestyle changes

  • Pharmacist-led monitoring and ongoing support

  • Available following a suitability assessment

Please note: Availability of Wegovy tablets is subject to UK licensing, supply and prescribing guidance. During your consultation, your pharmacist will recommend the most appropriate weight loss treatment for your individual needs.

Orlistat

For some patients, Orlistat may be a suitable treatment option.

Orlistat works differently from injectable medications by reducing the amount of dietary fat absorbed by your body. It is taken as a capsule with meals containing fat and should be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet.

Your pharmacist will discuss whether this treatment is appropriate for you.
